Look beyond “shady”

Watch the bed at different times of day. Morning sun, filtered light under trees, and deep shade beside a building are different conditions. Note whether the soil stays moist or competes with tree roots for water.

Two plants to discuss at the nursery

• Brunnera macrophylla is a foliage option for partial to full shade with moist, well-drained soil. Ask about cultivar size, winter hardiness, and protection from hot afternoon sun.
• Helleborus orientalis can suit a sheltered shade garden with suitable drainage. Discuss the exact variety and winter exposure. It is not edible, and toxicity matters where pets or children may browse.

Resistance is not a guarantee

NC State Extension describes these plants as resistant to deer browsing, but that is no guarantee that hungry deer will leave a planting alone. Ask about local browsing pressure and whether protection makes sense while plants establish.
